Private tour of the Winery, Siurana & Escaladei from Salou

We depart early in the morning from Salou or Tarragona to explore one of Catalonia’s most authentic and fascinating regions: Priorat, known for its medieval history, mountainous landscapes, and excellent wines. This is a private tour , designed for those who want an exclusive experience with personalized attention and complete comfort throughout the tour.

Our first stop will be at a traditional winery in Cornudella, where we’ll experience a complete wine tourism experience. There, we’ll learn about the winemaking process while touring the cellar and enjoy a tasting of four selected wines from different ranges. All accompanied by a small cherry aperitif as a welcome treat. The activity lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, making it the perfect way to start the day with a sensory introduction to Priorat.

We continue on to Siurana, a small village perched on an impressive limestone cliff, with panoramic views of the reservoir and the Prades Mountains. Siurana was the last Muslim stronghold in Catalonia, and still preserves the remains of the Saracen fortress at the entrance to the village, witnesses of the siege it suffered in the 12th century during the Reconquista. Legends tell that the Moorish queen Abd-el-Azia, when cornered, preferred to throw herself into the void on her horse rather than surrender. The horse’s horseshoe was left etched in the rock and can still be seen. The village’s main landmark is its Romanesque church of Santa María, built in the 12th century, with a simple but beautiful stone-carved portal that has stood the test of time.

After the visit, there will be time for lunch. We offer a complimentary lunch at a traditional local inn, featuring homemade dishes that reflect the culinary essence of Priorat. Approximate price: €40 per person (not included in the tour).

In the afternoon, we travel to a pivotal place in the history of Catalonia: the Charterhouse of Santa María de Escaladei. Founded in 1194 by Carthusian monks from Provence, it was the first Carthusian monastery on the Iberian Peninsula and the spiritual and economic center of the region for centuries. Its name, which means “Stairway to God,” alludes to an ancient legend in which a shepherd saw angels ascending a ladder resting on the sky. During the visit, we will explore its cloister, the church, a reconstructed cell that demonstrates the monks’ austere lifestyle, and other monastic buildings, all framed by the imposing landscape of the Montsant mountain range, which provides an atmosphere of contemplation and peace.

After this day filled with history, flavors, and nature, we’ll return to Salou or Tarragona in the afternoon, with an unforgettable experience etched in our minds.

Traditional Winery in Cornudella de Montsant
The day begins at a winery located in Cornudella de Montsant, in the heart of Priorat, one of the most prestigious designations of origin in Spain. This wine-growing area is characterized by its llicorella (slate) soil, which gives the wines a unique minerality. During the visit, you’ll tour the cellar where the winemaking process is explained, from the grape harvest to barrel aging. The experience is completed with a tasting of four selected wines from different ranges, reflecting the diversity and richness of the Montsant terroir. It all begins with a welcome cherry aperitif, in an activity that lasts approximately an hour and a half and allows you to understand why Priorat is a world reference for signature wine.

Siurana
This village, considered one of the most beautiful in Catalonia, sits on a steep cliff with stunning views of the Siurana Reservoir and the Prades Mountains. It was the last Muslim stronghold to fall during the Reconquista in the 12th century, and its Saracen castle, still in ruins, dominates the entrance to the village. Local chronicles and legends recall the Moorish queen Abd-el-Azia, who preferred to jump into the void with her horse rather than surrender; the imprint of her horseshoe, engraved in the rock, is still visible. In addition to its history, Siurana stands out for its 12th-century Romanesque church of Santa María, an example of sober architecture with a beautifully preserved stone portal. The natural surroundings and the intact medieval atmosphere make Siurana a magical place.

Charterhouse of Santa María de Escaladei
Founded in 1194, Escaladei was the first Charterhouse on the Iberian Peninsula. Established by monks from Provence, its construction marked the beginning of an austere monastic lifestyle that would profoundly influence the region. Its name, “Stairway to God,” comes from a mystical vision a shepherd reportedly had, seeing angels ascending to heaven via a ladder. The monastery flourished for centuries, managing nearby lands and villages until its abandonment in the 19th century with the confiscation of church property by Mendizábal. Today, its restored ruins can be visited: the cloister, the church, several outbuildings, and a reconstructed cell that demonstrates the Carthusian lifestyle, based on silence, prayer, and isolation. All of this is framed by the breathtaking landscape of the Serra del Montsant Natural Park.
