In front of the 12th-century Romanesque Church of Santa María, with its sober but beautiful sculpted portal, we will stop to admire one of the best-preserved temples in the region.

Poblet Monastery

The Monastery of Santa María de Poblet was founded in 1151 by Cistercian monks from France, under the orders of Count Ramon Berenguer IV. It is one of the largest and best-preserved Cistercian monastic complexes in the world and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. For centuries, it was an important spiritual, political, and cultural center of the Crown of Aragon, so much so that several kings were buried here, including James I the Conqueror and Peter the Ceremonious. The monastery still houses an active monastic community.
During the visit, you’ll see notable spaces such as the abbey church with the royal tombs, the Gothic cloister, the chapter house with its medieval vault, the 13th-century refectory, the library, and the monastic dormitory. The entire complex is surrounded by a wall with defensive towers, giving it the unique character of a monastery-fortress.

Siurana

Siurana is one of the most picturesque villages in Catalonia, perched on an impressive limestone cliff overlooking the river valley. It was the last Muslim stronghold in Catalonia and did not fall into Christian hands until 1153, marking the end of the Reconquista in the region.
Among its cobbled streets, you can still see the remains of the Moorish fortress built in the 9th century, with the base of a tower and part of the wall. One of its most famous legends is that of the Moorish queen Abd-el-Azia, who chose to jump into the void on her horse rather than surrender to the Christians. It is said that the horse’s horseshoe was left etched in the rock and can still be seen today.
Also noteworthy is the Romanesque church of Santa María, built in the 12th century, which preserves its beautiful sculpted stone portal. From the viewpoints, you can enjoy incomparable views of the Siurana reservoir and the Montsant mountain range.

Although there are no specific activities offered at the reservoir, during a visit to the village of Siurana, you can admire this spectacular hydraulic structure. Built in 1973, the reservoir retains the waters of the Siurana River and offers a stunning visual contrast with the rocky, mountainous surroundings.
Its calm waters and the reflection of the cliffs on the surface create a beautiful natural setting, ideal for photography lovers. From the village’s viewpoints, you can enjoy a privileged view of this reservoir, surrounded by the ochre and reddish hues characteristic of the Priorat region.
