We will leave early in the morning from Salou to Montserrat, a place recognized by the various attractions that the visitor can find in the area, from the scenic beauty, the rocky massif from which you can obtain incomparable views of the Catalan territory, and no less important the value historical, religious and artistic that owns the monastery of the place.

Once we arrive in Montserrat, we will visit the great monastery of Montserrat, built on an old hermitage. The monastery was built by the religious influence of the place, thanks to the continuous pilgrimages that pay homage to the virgin of Montserrat. The monastery is currently renovated, because of its destruction as a result of the invasion of Napoleon in Spain, so many artistic and architectural elements of the sanctuary are of modern dates.

After visiting the sanctuary we will visit the Montserrat viewpoint to appreciate the beauty that the mountain offers with its famous views that impress visitors.

We leave Montserrat towards SANT SADURNI D'ANOIA and VILAFRANCA DEL PENEDES, where we will visit a CAVA winery, and a well-known winery where a tasting of selected wines from the winery itself will take place, all after a visit to the wineries from the vineyard

We will return to Salou or Tarragona in the afternoon.

Monserrat and its History  

The sanctuary has its historical origin in the hermitage of Santa Maria that Count Wifredo el Velloso donated to the monastery of Ripoll in 888. 

In 1025, Oliba, abbot of Ripoll and bishop of Vic, was the founder of a new monastery in the hermitage of Santa María de Montserrat. In a very short time, the small monastery had pilgrims and visitors, these contributed to make known among the villagers the stories of miracles and wonders that the Virgin worked. 

In 1409, the monastery became an independent monastery. Between 1493 and 1835, a time of great growth reforms, Montserrat was part of the Congregation of Valladolid. 

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the monastery becomes a cultural center of the first order. Great composers leave the monastery’s music school. 

Later, the Napoleonic war and the confiscation of 1835 turned it into destruction and abandonment. But in 1844 the restoration of monastic life began and in 1881, at the Feast of the Coronation of the Image of the Virgin, she was proclaimed as Patroness of Catalonia by Pope Leo XIII 

In the Spanish Civil War, abandonment was experienced again in the monastery. But, the Government of Catalonia preserved Montserrat from looting and destruction. 

Monserrat Monastery 

It is a Benedictine abbey located on the mountain of Montserrat, belongs to the region of Bages, territory of Barcelona, ​​at a height of 720 meters above sea level. As for its administration, it belongs to the municipality of Monistrol de Montserrat, but some of its bordering lands enter the term of Collbató. This monastery is a symbol for Catalonia and has been transformed into a point dedicated to the pilgrimage for believers, also a recognized visit for tourists. 

Among the various actions that are done in Montserrat, the choir stands out, this is one of the choirs of the oldest singing children in Europe. 

The sanctuary of Montserrat, together with the sanctuaries of Torreciudad, El Pilar, Meritxell and Lourdes are part of the Marian Route, an itinerary directed by Marian spirituality and devotion, enjoys a great heritage, gastronomic and natural wealth. 

Sant Sadurni D’anoia 

Located in the Alt Penedès region, in the interior, but touching the coast, its surroundings are of a magnificent natural environment of vineyards, this landscape and that of the wineries are the main attractions of the municipality, they are very pending in all kinds of manifestations : architecture, industry and cultural activities. And it is that the overcoming of the phylloxera plague, at the end of the 19th century, and the combination of progress and craftsmanship in the preparation of sparkling wines, have made Sant Sadurní the capital of the bubbles. 

There are discovered the architectural jewels that the cava industry has been abandoning at different times. Buildings representing Catalan Modernism and the signatures of the greatest artists of the moment transformed the cava factories into huge living museums. At the Cava Interpretation Center, CIC Fassina, you will be able to know the history and emotions that the cava provokes.
