First thing in the morning, we will leave for Valladolid, capital of the Ribera del Duero

Visit to Peñafiel Castle

We will make a guided tour of the Peñafiel castle. In this great medieval fortification that looks like the hull of a ship, the Provincial Wine Museum is protected. In it we will see more secrets of the techniques that characterize the products of the Ribera del Duero.

Visit to Centennial winery

Next, there will be a tour of the Bodegas Protos, a centennial winery, which was born since 1927, located in the same town of Peñafiel. Here we will learn to distinguish the aromas, flavors and characteristics of the wines, including the tasting of a Verdejo white wine and a red crianza. We will learn about the entire production process, from its care in the vines of the vineyards to its rest in the cellar’s barrels.

We will continue our route to the nearby Curiel de Duero castle. Its restored layout allows us to immerse ourselves in the charming history of the Kingdom of Castile, also in the important episodes of this time that occurred there.

In the afternoon we moved to Gumiel de Izán. On the outskirts of this Burgos municipality we will head to the Portia Wineries, designed by the famous and respected architect Norman Foster. We will know its avant-garde facilities to contemplate the benefits of its wines through a tasting of local wines. We will also learn other curiosities of the production process.

At the end of the tour, return to Valladolid. Depending on the time, time to walk around the center and return to Madrid by AVE.

Rivera del Duero and its History

Through their merchants, the Phoenicians fitted the advanced cultivation and production techniques in the Iberian Peninsula. 

Centuries later, the Romans discovered the quality of the wines of Hispania. The wines of the Ribera del Duero were used to supply the armies of Rome. 

Monastic orders expanded throughout the territory after the 10th century, multiplying the culture of wine. The monks from Císter made their own wines in Valbuena de Duero in the 12th century. 

In 1295, the harvest began to be regulated and since the fifteenth century began the regulations of the production and quality of the wine.
