The Torre Bellesguard Barcelona has a history of more than six centuries. That’s right, it is built on the land formerly occupied by the castle of King Martín I of Aragon, the last king of Aragon descended from a Catalan dynasty.
This house has a historical and patriotic dimension that in many cases is reflected in the design and decoration of the place. Gaudí showed great respect for the history of this place by adopting a more sober style than the one he used to customarily. In addition, on repeated occasions, some episodes in the life of King Martín de Aragón are reflected in the decoration.
The result is surprising since the house has many typical examples of the architect’s expertise (the tower, the arcades, the stained glass windows …) without his style being apparent at first glance. Thus, this house allows us to appreciate another facet of Gaudí’s work, not so well known but no less interesting.
Like a large number of the architect’s buildings, the Torre Bellesguard remained unfinished. Domènech Sugrañes continued with the project from 1917. Commissioned by Jaume Figueras, the house soon passed into the hands of his widow, but the works were very expensive and she ended up selling the house.
During the civil war, the residence was occupied by some nuns and later bought by the Guilera family. It has been passed down from generation to generation for 70 years and today it is still inhabited. It is completely private property and does not have any public subsidies.
