    DESTINATION INFORMATION

PRIORAT TOUR OVERVIEW: WINES AND HISTORY ⇢

We begin the last day on Gratallops, where we can find the most spectacular vineyard of Catalonia. In this area we can also find the Priorat C.O.D. vine. At the vineyard where we lodged we will have a complete vine tasting experience.

    Visit to viewpoint of Priorat

We continue to La Figuera, the best viewpoint of Priorat and where we can see the Pirinees, dels Ports mountain range, Segre river,  Maestrazgo de Castellón and some lands of Aragón.  We will visit San Pau Shrine, near to our present location.

    Cabacés tour

Then, we go to Cabacés,  ideal place to make oleotourism. Here exists 8 mills of olive oil that we can visit (maybe one or two mills so to have time to know other places of Priorat).  We suggest you to visit Miró Cubells Cava Loca, who conserves a millennial tradition.

After that, we continue our trip at Priorat going to Vilella Baixa, place that has remains from its medieval age such as “la calle que no pasa” or San Juan Bautista Church. Vilella Baixa is also known as Priorat’s New York thanks to the 9 floor buildings we can find in the town.

Then, we go to Poboleda to visit Priorat Cathedral also known as San Pedro Church, of Neoclassic style. At Poboleda we can also have a sight of Monsant.

Our last place to visit is Ciurana. There are two must-to-see places: the remains of an Arabian stronghold built on IX century, and Santa Maria Church, a Roman church built during XII century. We go back to Barcelona.

On our way back, we will watch Cartuja de Escaladei, first Cartushian monastery established in the Iberian peninsula.

    INFORMATION OF PRIORAT

    Priorat and its History

Located in the south of Catalonia, it is part of the regions of New Catalonia, the territory inhabited by the Saracens until the s. XII. It conserves vestiges of past times that make time travel, among which the Saracen fortress of Siurana, capital of the valiato of the same name in the interior where the remains of one of the oldest mosques in Catalonia have been found. The Christian reconquest, which began Count-King Ramon Berenguer IV, consolidated the building of churches and monasteries with the aim of spreading the new faith.

    La Figuera

The town is located in an elevated position from where you can enjoy an incredible panorama. The town is also known as the sentinel of El Priorat.

From this villa you can highlight its surroundings, the natural viewpoints to admire magnificent landscapes. One of its places of interest within the urban area is the location known as Els Colls de Solans, also a short distance from the town, from where you get a unique perspective located to the northwest side of the population.

    Cabaces

Cabacés is a municipality in the Priorat region, this is crossed from north to south by the Montsant River, this causes the territory to be divided into two unequal areas, close to the Sierra del Montsant Natural Park. As a site of interest of the town is the Miquel Montagud Municipal Museum, here the works of the old private museum El Eco del Greco are exhibited.

Agriculture is the basic activity of Cabacés. Its main crops are: dry land, olive and almond trees, as well as vine and hazelnut; Fruit and vegetables.

    La Vilella Baixa

It is a municipality in the Priorat region, this is surrounded on each side by different municipalities of the same region. This is the second smallest municipality in the region, Vilella Baixa is crossed by the Montsant River and the Escaladei Creek, which is why one of the most characteristic elements of this municipality is the bridge built just at the point where part of the Two basins come together. The Renaissance church of Sant Joan Baptista should also be highlighted.

    Poboleda

It is a town located in the center of the historic Priorat. The town of Poboleda is the only population center in the municipality, which borders La Morera de Montsant on the east side and on the north side, Torroja del Priorat on the west side and Porrera on the south side.

Historical traces are found that show human presence since prehistoric times. Its mountains have been worked by the very old ancestors hands, with the work of innumerable margins of dry stone.

The vineyard is the main crop, occupies 70% of the land in operation, follows the olive tree and also the hazelnut and the almond tree.

    Charterhouse of Escaladei

It is an abandoned monastery in a valley, with an incredible view as it is surrounded by the Montsant mountains. Despite the semi-abandoned state, it has an exceptional charm and magic.

Located in the Priory region. Founded in the twelfth century, it is considered to be the first Charterhouse of the Iberian Peninsula. According to legend, the monks chose this place for a pastor who had dreamed of angels who climbed to heaven by a supported ladder that was supported by a pine tree, that is why Escaladei’s name meansladder of God.”
