Visit to Montserrat

Immediately after our arrival at Palamós, we will go towards Montserrat (2 hours of travel). At Montserrat, a place known by the surrounding mountain that gives the name to the area and offers an espectacular landscape; we will visit the Moreneta shrine. Its name was given by local people to the Virgin of Montserrat: Mare de Deu de Montserrat;
This sanctuary is located inside a cave, as said by a local tale of the Virgin aparittion.  We will explore the monastery, built over an ancient chapel. This monastery was built thanks to the religious influence the place had by the numerous pilgrimages that visited Montserrat to honor the Virgin of the place. The artistic and architectonic elements we can see inside the monastery aren’t the original ones, these have been replaced by modern elements because of the original monastery destruction caused by the invasion of Napoleon to Spain.  After we finish our visit to the chapel, we will go to the viewpoint to enjoy the sight
that Montserrat mountain gives to its visitors.

Finally we will go to Barcelona, before coming back to Palamós, to learn and enjoy a bit more about Barcelona wine and enjoy a wine tasting to close our tour.

Vic and its History 

Vic was the capital of the former Iberian tribe of the Ausetans. in the third century a. C. The city was later conquered by the Romans, this is a temple today. It has been an episcopal seat since the sixth century. During the eighth and ninth centuries, Vic was among the brands that divided the frank forces of the Islamic. 

The bishop of Vic established the “Peace and Truce of God” in the year 1027, this helped decrease private wars. 

During the seventeenth century, the city was one of the first points of rebellion against the center policy of King Felipe V, a conflict that ended up becoming the War of Succession. 

History of Casa Riera 

Casa Riera Ordeix has 160 years giving a great quality unique in the world with its Vic sausage. Its products are exclusive and elaborated in a traditional and traditional way, procedures that come from six generations ago. 

In the middle of the city of Vic and with the motto Benvinguts at home (“Welcome home”), Casa Riera Ordeix prepares to receive its extraordinary and centenary wooden dryers, which make an atmosphere from the 1852 era. 

The Vic Salchichón from Casa Riera Ordeix is ​​considered the salchichón par excellence, unique worldwide. 

Monserrat Monastery 

 It is a Benedictine abbey located on the mountain of Montserrat, belongs to the region of Bages, territory of Barcelona, ​​at a height of 720 meters above sea level. As for its administration, it belongs to the municipality of Monistrol de Montserrat, but some of its bordering lands enter the term of Collbató. This monastery is a symbol for Catalonia and has been transformed into a point dedicated to the pilgrimage for believers, also a recognized visit for tourists. 

Among the various actions that are done in Montserrat, the choir stands out, this is one of the choirs of the oldest singing children in Europe. 

The sanctuary of Montserrat, together with the sanctuaries of Torreciudad, El Pilar, Meritxell and Lourdes are part of the Marian Route, an itinerary directed by Marian spirituality and devotion, enjoys a great heritage, gastronomic and natural wealth. 

La Moreneta 

Popularly called the Virgin of Montserrat. This is a black figure, named of the Patroness of Catalonia. 

The two figures, the Virgin and the child Jesus, are an unusually dark color of the faces and hands, several studies of wood and experts have decided that the tone of the Virgin of Montserrat is due to the transformation of the varnish of his face and hands over time over the centuries.
