    DESTINATION INFORMATION

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE BESALU TOUR - RUPIT AND VIC⇢

We leave Barcelona to visit Besalú in the morning.

    We will walk along the Old Bridge of Besalú;

    Visit to Roma Bridge

It is believed that it was built in the eleventh century on a Roman bridge, but it was rebuilt in the fourteenth century. After the destruction it suffered in the civil war, it was rebuilt again. It consists of two angled sections and in the center is the tower with a small arch. We will visit the city center, flooded with streets and facades as part of its medieval heritage. During the tour we visit the ecclesiastical monuments found in the town, such as the churches of Sant Pere, Santa María and Sant Vicenç, which alternate Romanesque elements with other Gothic ones. For its part, in the Jewish quarter you can visit medieval baths, dedicated to the Hebrew ritual ablutions.

    Garrotxa Volcanic Zone tour

Later, we will visit the Natural Park of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone, a place of exceptional landscape value thanks to the thick beech, oak and holm oak forests. After we will take a walk through the area. In the Garrotxa you can see two totally different types of landscape: in much of the southern half there are more than 40 volcanoes and several lava flows that form a soft landscape without too many slopes, protected by the Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of the Garrotxa.

We will also visit Rupit, considered  the medieval charm of Catalonia. The charm of this city is found in its stone houses, built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which are very well preserved despite being 400 years old. We will make a stop for lunch.

We will leave the town towards Cingles del Tavertet, a natural space that rises above the Sau Valley and the flat d’Osona. In it we will find forests of great landscape interest inhabited by birds of prey. In addition, Tavertet is located on a cliff, near a cliff that offers views of the Sau swamp and the Montseny mountains.

    Visit to Vic

We will take our road to Vic, a historic and monumental city, capital of a fertile pre-Pyrenean plain. We cross the medieval center of the city, from Placa Major, the most attractive urban enclave of the medieval nucleus. In this area we can see Gothic buildings such as Casa Beuló or more modern styles such as Casa Tolosa.

We finish our visit knowing the remains of the Palau dels Montcada, ruins of an ancient Roman temple from the 2nd century A.D. prehistoric of Sant Bartolomeu Sesgorgues.

We will return to Barcelona at night.

    BESALU AND RUPIT INFORMATION

    Besalú and its History

Some evidence of human presence in the municipal territory of Besalú belong to the remains of a small, oval cabin located near Can Barraca, on the northwest side of the current population, which was inhabited at the end of the second millennium BC (1200 – 1100 BC). Now speaking of the center of Besalú, the oldest documented remains are defined in a small combustion structure of the first iron age (650-600 BC) found in the Devesa, at the end of the Santa Maria hill .

    Rupit and its History

Its origin is in the castle that was built around the year 1000, replacing the original of Fabregues. Around them, they built the houses of the settlers. In the fourteenth century the town suffered a significant decline, but recovered. In the course of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it reached the maximum glory that the town remembers.

In 1860 Rupit and Pruit were two independent municipalities, but at the end of the 20th century they once again formed a single municipal unit.

    Vic and its History

Vic was the capital of the former Iberian tribe of the Ausetans. in the third century a. C. The city was later conquered by the Romans, this is a temple today. It has been an episcopal seat since the sixth century. During the eighth and ninth centuries, Vic was among the brands that divided the frank forces of the Islamic.

The bishop of Vic established thePeace and Truce of God” in the year 1027, this helped decrease private wars.

During the seventeenth century, the city was one of the first points of rebellion against the center policy of King Felipe V, a conflict that ended up becoming the War of Succession.

L’Alt Empordà is located north of the Costa Brava and in the northeast corner of Catalonia, playing with France. It borders the Pyrenees to the north, which rush through the Sierra de l’Albera to the Cap de Creus that enters the Mediterranean Sea (east). The plain of the Alt Empordà that joins it with the Baix Empordà to the south and the regions of the Pla de l’Estany and the Garrotxa, to the southwest, is watered by two rivers that die in the Gulf of Roses: the Muga, which refers to the waters of L’Albera, and the Fluvià, born in the Garrotxa.

    Besalú Bridge

Located on the river Fluviá. Going through his door, he entered the county capital. It is said that it was built in the eleventh century on a Roman bridge, but its reconstruction was in the fourteenth century. After the destruction he suffered in the civil war it was rebuilt again. It consists of two angled sections and in the center is the tower with a small arch. The bridge has eight pointed arches. The entrance from the city is guarded by two towers that joined the wall. These constructions were used to defend the entrance to the city and as a toll collection.

Natural Park of the Garrocha Volcanic Zone

Located in the eastern Pyrenees, within the region of La Garrocha in the province of Girona (Catalonia, Spain). It is a beautiful volcanic landscape of the Iberian Peninsula. It has 40 volcanic cones of an age of 100,000 years, 10 craters, 23 well-preserved cones and more than 20 basaltic lava flows. Its orography, its soil and its climate make up a varied vegetation, with holm oak, oak and beech. It has a very humid climate, and the vegetation of the area could be concluded that it is of Atlantic climate. It has a protected area of 15,000 Ha., This includes 11 municipalities and 28 natural reserves

    Major plate

The square is located where the convent of San Felipe Neri was located. Later, it became the headquarters of the perfidious Spanish Inquisition in Mallorca until 1823. The current square was built in the 19th century, from 1825 to the beginning of the 20th century.

Its impressive buildings that surround it form arches, thus creating a covered corridor in the lower part where stores can present their products. You can see a large selection of cafes, bars and restaurants with terraces that open to the square where street performers and musicians perform.

    Palau dels Montcada

The Castell dels Montcada is located in the upper part of the city of Vic, around the Roman temple, its walls formed the inner courtyard. In the eleventh century it was known as Palau or Comtal Tower of Vic. By 1088 it was delivered to the Montcada with a small territory around it, where the departure of Montcada from the city formed.

He was guarded by castellanus and mayors of the Montcada, thus becoming the center of administration of his property. In 1356 his supreme dominion, which rivaled the king, was ceded to Viscount Bernat III of Cabrera, a fact that motivated the opposition of the bishops and that began a time of kidnappings and tensions that left marks in the history of Vic until 1448. In This year Vic’s advisors bought it from the Foix, Viscounts of Castellbò, and gave it for sale to the General Charity of Vic in 1450.
