We continue on to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Meritxell , patron saint of Andorra and one of the most important temples in the country. The current building, designed by architect Ricardo Bofill, uniquely combines modernity and spirituality.
The original 12th-century sanctuary was destroyed by fire in 1972. However, the statue of the Virgin Mary miraculously remained intact, reinforcing her sacred character for Andorrans. The Virgin of Meritxell is celebrated every September 8th, a national holiday.
