The Casa Calvet Barcelona (1899) is one of Gaudí’s first works. Some have considered it the most conservative work of the artist. Even so, we will find marked modernist elements, such as the curved façade or the attic balconies, authentic fairytale creations. The ground floor is today a restaurant.
The Casa Calvet, by Antoni Gaudí, was built for the manufacturer Pere Màrtir Calvet. It served both for his business, to which the ground floor and the basement were dedicated, as well as for houses, located on the upper floors. In 1900, the Barcelona City Council awarded him the prize for the best house of the year. Casa Calvet is a tribute to the Catalan Baroque and is built using Montjuïc stone, with a splendid use of wrought iron on the balconies. The lobby and the ground floor, now converted into a restaurant, are especially interesting, where we can see the typically Catalan ceiling, the granite Solomonic columns or the arches with vine-shaped reliefs.
If we look at the facade of Casa Calvet, we will see how it ends in a curve composed of three inverted lobes and two that stand out, crowned by an iron cross. Below the inverted lobes we will find three busts: Sant Pere Màrtir (the owner’s namesake), Sant Genís d’Arles and Sant Genís de Roma (patron saints of Calvet’s hometown). And it is that Antoni Gaudí wanted to satisfy his client by filling the building with details that made reference to him, such as the columns-spools of thread that flank the entrance or the letter “C” that crowns the door of the house.
