Besalú and its History
Some evidence of human presence in the municipal territory of Besalú belong to the remains of a small, oval cabin located near Can Barraca, on the northwest side of the current population, which was inhabited at the end of the second millennium BC (1200 – 1100 BC). Now speaking of the center of Besalú, the oldest documented remains are defined in a small combustion structure of the first iron age (650-600 BC) found in the Devesa, at the end of the Santa Maria hill .
Girona and its History
Its history comes from the settlements of the Iberians of the tribe of the destitute in the villages that surround and close the Plain of Girona. Around 77 BC Pompey made the construction of an oppidum on the Via Heráclea and the Romans founded the original Girona, named in Latin Gerunda.
This city was repopulated with the inhabitants of the town of San Julián de Ramis so it became an important center of the region, with the articulation of a Roman ager that surrounded the city. Although Gerunda was inside, far from the coast, it had a good connection to the port of Ampurias.
Salvador Dalí Theater-Museum
It is a museum dedicated entirely to the painter Salvador Dalí is located in the Gala-Salvador Dalí square, number 5, in Figueras, the Theater-Museum was the third most visited museum in Spain in 2017, with 1 207 149 visitors, being located in the position number 40 of its ranking of the 100 most visited art museums in the world. Managed by the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation. The artist left in his will a large number of works of art to the Spanish State, these were distributed between this museum and the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid.
Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa
The park is an impressive volcanic landscape of the Peninsula and is one of the most prominent in Europe. The park houses 38 volcanic cones, more than twenty basaltic lava flows and many biological and cultural charms. This Natural space consists of thirteen municipalities, the majority on the banks of the Fluvià.
Its vegetation is varied and very abundant, with more than a thousand species in a territory of holm oak, oak and beech, among them the Fageda d’en Jordà (Hayedo de Jordà). It is of great fauna diversity.
The most named volcanoes are those of Santa Margarida, Montsacopa and Croscat, these are the largest and also the youngest in the Iberian Peninsula. To them is added an architectural heritage that includes churches and castles.
Churches of Sant Pere
The oldest remains that were preserved in the parish church of Figueres come from the X-XI centuries. They constitute in the part of a wall of the north face with a loophole, next to the bell tower. In the decline of the fourteenth century, King Pedro the Cerimonious ordered the construction of a new church in Figueres; The Gothic-style temple with a single nave, without a cruise or an ambulatory, rose above the Romanesque building. At present, it maintains its original form as far as the apse began.
The Girona Wall
It is the best viewpoint in the city. From the wall you can see, not only the rooftops, but also the Cathedral, to the Pyrenees in the background.
From the walls built in the 1st century BC, between the 70s and 80s, to the renovations that were made on the occasion of the War of Independence, the walls of Girona have been present in bloody struggles and fierce sieges. After the second half of the nineteenth century they no longer had their defensive importance and changed to be an obstacle to growth, also for the urban benefit of the city.
In the first third of the twentieth century, the wall canvases that did not allow for urban expansion are laid down, and those that did not hinder the new construction of housing and communication roads remain standing, that is, the sections corresponding to the west side of the city .
