This place has more than 1 M visitors a year. It is not a museum of classical painting, it is a unique museum, which will open our minds, and leave us hesitant about the different creations.
We will departure to Tarragona by train.
At the Tarragona station, our guide awaits us to take us to Falset.
In Falset we will discover the “Cathedral of wine”, this is a modernist building built by the architect of VallsCésar Martinell, a disciple of AntoniGaudí. It is one of the wineries with the most representation in Catalonia.
The Plaza de la Quartera is surrounded by old porches and is one of the few in Catalonia built on a slope. In this same square are the two palaces, that of the Dukes of Medinaceli, of Renaissance style (1630) and that of the Counts of Azara or Casa Grande.
We will also see the CASTLE OF THE CONDES DE PRADES, currently a Wine Interpretation Center and known as Castell del Vi. (S. XII).
Reaching the end of the day, there will be an eno-gastronomic activity in the “Agrícola Falset Marçà”, where we will enjoy a small wine tasting.
DAY 3: FALSET – CAVA DE EN GRATALLOPS – SCALADEI – SIURANA OIL MILL – CAVA WINES IN SIURANA – MONTBLANC
We will departure early from Falset
We will arrive in Gratallops, this is one of the most authentic villages of the Priorat, soaked in viticulture and surrounded by vineyards and wineries. This trip will take between two and three hours, between vineyards and the most authentic and beautiful roads of the whole region. We will visit a Gratallops winery and enjoy a wine tasting. We will end with a panoramic view of the wineries in the area and their vineyards.
Later, we will go to Escaladei, this town was originally the Conrearía of the Carthusian monastery that was established near there. It was the headquarters of the businesses of the house, from where the prior procurator directed the workers, monks or not, who took care of the wineries, herds and diverse fields. Here we will visit the facilities of CARTUJA DE SANTA MARIA DE ESCALADEI, this is the main monument of the región and currently belongs to the Museum of History of Catalonia. La Cartuja was founded in the 12th century by Alfonso el Casto, and was the first in the Iberian Peninsula. The prior and his domains were those that gave name to what is called the historical Priorat and also to the whole region. With other extensions since it was founded, it was finally abandoned in 1835 due to the exclamation and confiscation of Mendizábal. It is highly recommended to visit a restored cell, which clearly shows the way of life of this community.
We will continue on our way to Siurana, a charming town of cobbled houses and streets and the remains of the Saracen fortress, located at the entrance of the town. At its feet, a swamp of clean and calm waters offers the possibility of practicing all kinds of water sports.
The most important building in SIURANA is the Church, in a Romanesque style, has a cover with a figured eardrum framed by three semicircular archivolts; that rest on six columns with capitals decorated with diverse motifs.
From the town of Siurana you can enjoy stunning views of the Sierra de Montsant, the Gritella and the Prades Mountains.
After a small stop in Cornudella de Montsant, we will have time for lunch and after that, we will visit the Baronia del Montsant winery, where we will have a tasting of 7 wines accompanied by a delicious appetizer.
We will finish the tour of the day in the direction of Montblanc, where we will visit the Convent of San Francisco, a 1230 building, in Gothic style, but without cruise ships, with arches and wooden deck, which in its time was polychrome, and a facade very austere.
It has one of the best views of the wall. We will continue along the Wall and towers of Montblanc, which was built between 1366 and 1397, during the well-known War of the Pedros, the wall currently has 25 defensive towers. This fortification and its towers began to be recovered during the last century, and now it is a wall in excellent condition, and several towers enabled to climb to the top of them, from where you have stunning panoramic views of the town of Montblanc and from its surroundings. We finished our passage through Montblanc in The Church of Santa María de Montblanc, a first Romanesque church located in a high area of the town was built in 1163, but it was in 1310 when it was decided to lift the building from what was to be a great cathedral Gothic Several Peruvians led to it not being completed, so that in the fifteenth century the works were completed without the construction of the main facade and the bell tower. Therefore, now when we go to visit it we will go up some stairs to the square where a Renaissance-style side door opens, and by its current interior configuration we will verify that it was unfinished.
DAY 4: MONASTIR DE POBLET – VILAFRANCA DEL PENEDES – BARCELONA
