OVERVIEW OF THE JEWISH TOUR ON THE COSTA BRAVA: GIRONA, BESALÚ AND CASTELLÓ D'EMPÚRIES⇢

Jewish Heritage Tour on the Costa Brava: Girona, Besalú, and Castelló d’Empúries from Barcelona

We begin our route from Barcelona to delve into the rich Jewish heritage that survives in three of the most captivating destinations on the Costa Brava. Girona, Besalú, and Castelló d’Empúries welcome us to discover valuable evidence of the life of the Jewish communities that flourished in the region during the Middle Ages.

Our first stop is Girona, where we will tour one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe. The old call, made up of narrow, cobbled streets that wind between stone houses and quiet courtyards, extends at the foot of the cathedral and was the scene of the splendor of a vibrant community between the 13th and 14th centuries. Walking through this network is an immersive experience: the walls convey stories, and the atmosphere maintains its medieval essence. In this historic setting, we will visit the Museum of Jewish History, located on the same site where the main synagogue stood centuries ago. Its exhibition brings us closer to the daily life, customs, and role of Jews in Girona and other towns in Catalonia.

We continue the day to Besalú, a town with the soul of a county whose most emblematic image is the imposing medieval bridge that spans the Fluvià River. This postcard is merely the prologue to a monumental complex that invites us to explore centuries of history. Among its charms, we discover a Jewish quarter that in medieval times housed an organized and active community. One of the most notable discoveries is the mikveh, an underground room used for ritual baths, built in the Romanesque style and considered unique in the Iberian Peninsula. This legacy, along with the harmony of its medieval architecture, has earned Besalú the title of National Historic-Artistic Site.

Here we will pause for lunch. Although lunch is not included, we’ll provide you with carefully selected recommendations so you can enjoy local cuisine in one of Catalonia’s most charming towns.

After this gastronomic stop, we head towards Castelló d’Empúries. This town, located next to natural areas such as the Aiguamolls del Empordà and the Bay of Roses, was home to one of the most important Jewish communities in the region. At its peak, it numbered nearly 300 people, leaving a visible mark on the town’s urban planning and historical documentation. Strolling through its old town is like immersing yourself in a labyrinth of streets and squares that once formed the heart of the call. In the Medieval History Museum of the Curia-Prison, you’ll find a room dedicated exclusively to this legacy, with records that reveal the existence of synagogues, local cemeteries, and the commercial role of Jews in the town’s life.

After a day full of history, culture, and medieval architecture, we begin our return to Barcelona.
