    INFORMATION OF GIRONA AND NURIA

    Girona and its History

Its history comes from the settlements of the Iberians of the tribe of the destitute in the villages that surround and close the Plain of Girona. Around 77 BC Pompey made the construction of an oppidum on the Via Heráclea and the Romans founded the original Girona, named in Latin Gerunda.

This city was repopulated with the inhabitants of the town of San Julián de Ramis so it became an important center of the region, with the articulation of a Roman ager that surrounded the city. Although Gerunda was inside, far from the coast, it had a good connection to the port of Ampurias.

    Nuria and her Story

A legend tells that around 700, Bishop San Gil arrived in the Núria valley, coming from Nimes, there he had founded a monastery. He lived in Núria for four years, in search of peace and tranquility of the hermit life. His days were given to prayer and the manufacture of his own icons, of them, the image of the Virgin of Núria. It is said that, when San Gil arrived at the valley, he brought a cross with him, stayed in a cave that now bears his name, there he raised a small chapel and left inside the current image of the Virgin (the image is of the XII-XIII centuries). In the year 704, Sant Gil, persecuted by the Visigothic king Vitisa (Witiza), a well-known iconoclast who fought against the worship of Christian carvings and icons, fled to the south side of the Iberian Peninsula but left his little one very well hidden treasure: the image of the Virgin of Núria. Next to the Virgin, she also hid the pot that I use to make the food, the cross that witnessed her prayers and the bell with which she called the shepherds to come to eat.

    Camprodon Valley

The Camprodón Valley, close to Vallter 2000, is a charming natural paradise for those who love the mountain. Its houses and streets are of a typical mountain style, as well as its gastronomy, fauna and landscapes, the Camprodón Valley, and its municipalities, are points of reference in rural tourism.

    Ulldeter Shelter

Located at 2,200 m high (one of the highest shelters). It is a very well built refuge, its rooms are very comfortable bunk beds

The refuge has a huge collection of mountain and travel magazines, and many board games to entertain large and small tourists.

    Tirapits Barracks

Located to the west of Coll de Tirapits and below 2,700 m above sea level, it has a good panoramic view of the Freser Basin and the surrounding peaks such as the named Pico del Infierno. At these altitudes and in a very exposed place, the hut supports the passage of time as possible. Made of stone and round plan without a window, its general state is delicate but solid.

    Zipper Train

This is the only transport that reaches the center of the Montserrat Mountain Sanctuary site. This runs through the unique mountain and allows you to enjoy lovely views of the mountain through the panoramic glass of the train.
