DAY 1: BARCELONA – GIRONA – EMPURIES RUINS – SANT PERE DE RODES – CADAQUES – ALT EMPORDA WINE CELLAR
Departure from Barcelona early in the morning towards the north of Catalonia, almost on the border, to reach the city of Girona, a romantic city with countless places to visit.
In Girona we will have the opportunity to visit some interesting places such as:
The Eiffel Bridge, built at the meeting of 4 rivers
The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Girona, with the largest altar of all European Gothic art
Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants
The Arab Baths of Girona, from the 12th century
The Jewish Quarter, from the Middle Ages, one of the best preserved in Europe
We continue on our way to Empuries, a privileged place located in the municipality of La Escala, on the south side of a bay that was declared one of the most beautiful in the world by UNESCO, the Bay of Roses. These ruins can be visited in summer every day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., in winter from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the rest of the year from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In the Greek part you can see remains of the urban wall from the 5th century BC, the market square and other buildings, but in the Roman part you can see some very well-preserved mosaics of ancient domus, also remains of an amphitheater and the forum, along with several statues.
We continue towards Port de la Selva to reach Sant Pere de Rodes, a monumental complex, formed by the monastery of Sant Pere, the village of Santa Creu and the castle of Verdera.
In the afternoon we take the route to the coastal town of Cadaques, with its labyrinthine streets and a promenade.
Time for lunch in one of the restaurants in Cadaques.
Figueres is the capital of the Alt Empordá region, rich for its wine cellars and its coast, with a winemaking tradition that dates back to Roman times. Here we will take part of the D.O. Empordá Wine Route, which runs along a transversal line from the sea to the mountains.
Accommodation in Figueres
DAY 2: DALI (Fiqueres) – TRAIN – WINE CELLAR IN FALSET (PRIORAT)
Early in the morning we will visit a unique museum in the world, the Salvador Dalí Theatre-Museum, which houses a collection of works donated by Dalí himself, a famous Spanish artist, with more than 1 million visitors a year. It is not a museum of classical painting, it is a unique museum, which will open our minds and leave us in doubt due to the different creations.
Departure to Tarragona by train.
At the Tarragona station, our guide will be waiting for us and will take us to Falset.
In Falset we will visit the “Cathedral of wine”, this is a modernist building built by the Valls architect César Martinell, a disciple of Antoni Gaudí. It is one of the most representative wineries in Catalonia.
The Quartera square is surrounded by old porches and is one of the few in Catalonia built on a slope. In this same square are the two palaces, that of the Dukes of Medinaceli, in Renaissance style (1630) and that of the Counts of Azara or Casa Grande. In the area we will visit
We will also visit the CASTLE OF THE COUNTS OF PRADES, currently a Wine Interpretation Centre and known as Castell del Vi. (12th century).
Finally, there will be an eno-gastronomic activity at the Agrícola Falset Marçà, where there will be a small wine tasting.
DAY 3: FALSET – CAVA DE EN GRATALLOPS – SCALADEI – MOLINO DE ACEITE SIURANA – CAVA VINOS EN SIURANA – MONTBLANC
Early departure from Falset
Arrival in Gratallops, this is one of the most authentic villages in the Priorat, steeped in viticulture and surrounded by vineyards and wineries. This excursion, lasting between two and three hours, is among vineyards and along the most authentic and beautiful paths in the entire region. We will visit a winery in Gratallops and do a wine tasting. We will finish with a panoramic view of the wineries in the area and their vineyards.
Then we move on to Escaladei, this town was originally the estate of the Carthusian monastery that was established nearby. It was the headquarters of the house’s business, from where the prior procurator directed the workers, monks or not, who took care of the wineries, flocks and various fields. Here you will visit the facilities of the CARTUJA DE SANTA MARIA DE ESCALADEI, this is the main monument of the region, currently belonging to the Museum of History of Catalonia. The Carthusian monastery was founded in the 12th century by Alfonso the Chaste, and was the first in the Iberian Peninsula. The prior and his domains were the ones that gave their name to what is called the historic Priorat and also to the entire region. With other extensions since it was founded, it was finally abandoned in 1835 due to the dispossession and confiscation of church property by Mendizábal. A visit to a restored cell is highly recommended, which clearly shows the way of life of this community.
We continue on our way to Siurana, a charming town with cobbled houses and streets and the remains of the fortress.
Saracen Aleza, located at the entrance to the town. At its feet, a reservoir of clean and calm waters offers the possibility of practicing all kinds of water sports.
The most important building in SIURANA is the Church, in a Romanesque style, it has a doorway with a figured tympanum framed by three semicircular archivolts; which rest on six columns with capitals decorated with various motifs.
From the town of Siurana you can enjoy impressive views of the Sierra de Montsant, the Gritella and the Prades Mountains.
After a short stop in Cornudella de Montsant, we will have a stop for lunch and then we will visit the Baronia del Montsant winery, where we will have a tasting of 7 wines accompanied by a delicious appetizer.
We end the day’s tour in the direction of Montblanc, where we will visit the Convent of San Francisco, a building from 1230, in the Gothic style, but without transepts, with arches and a wooden roof, which in its time was polychrome, and a very austere façade. It has one of the best views of the wall. We continue along the Montblanc Wall and Towers, which were built between 1366 and 1397, during the famous War of the Pedros. The wall currently has 25 defensive towers. This fortification and its towers began to be restored during the last century, and now it is a wall in excellent condition of conservation, and various towers enabled to climb to the top of them, from where you have impressive panoramic views of the town of Montblanc and its surroundings. We end our visit to Montblanc at the Church of Santa María de Montblanc. The first Romanesque church was built in 1163 in a higher part of the town, but it was not until 1310 that the decision was made to build what was to be a great Gothic cathedral. Various mishaps meant that it was not finished, so that in the 15th century the work was considered finished, pending the construction of the main façade and the bell tower. Therefore, when we go to visit it now we will go up some stairs to the square where a Renaissance-style side door opens, and due to its current interior configuration we will see that it was left unfinished.
DAY 4: MONASTIR DE POBLET – VILAFRANCA DEL PENEDES – BARCELONA
Early departure from Montblanc to the Poblet Monastery in a south-westerly direction. This is a Cistercian abbey that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. A large architectural complex with nearly 1000 years of history, among the 3 largest and most complete in the world, which surrounds the church built in the 12th century and attached to a fortified royal residence. You can also see a community of 140 monks who still live in the monastery.
We can see the dining room and the library, which preserve the original 13th century ribbed ceiling; the chapter house; the old kitchen or the old bedroom among many other spaces.
From there we go towards Penedes, a unique rural landscape environment, characterized by its large vineyards, with rural tourism accommodation, unique heritage elements and the various wineries and cellars that have made this area internationally recognized. Here we will do the last tasting of our trip in a CAVAS Winery, to get to know the bubbly Catalan champagne.
